Quantitative methods in tourism and hospitality: a perspective article
2019
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of past perspectives and future trends in tourism and hospitality research. Design/methodology/approach The study grounds the discussion on the timeline evolution of quantitative research methods. Findings Although still under-recognized by scholars, mixed methods represent the future of research in tourism and hospitality. Research limitations/implications The investigation is confined to quantitative methods. Originality/value No other surveys sketch a period of 150 years of quantitative analyses in tourism and hospitality.
Combined use of PCA and QSAR/QSPR to predict the drugs mechanism of action. An application to the NCI ACAM Database
2009
During the years the National Cancer Institute (NCI) accumulated an enormous amount of information through the application of a complex protocol of drugs screening involving several tumor cell lines, grouped into panels according to the disease class. The Anti-cancer Agent Mechanism (ACAM) database is a set of 122 compounds with anti-cancer activity and a reasonably well known mechanism of action, for which are available drug screening data that measure their ability to inhibit growth of a panel of 60 human tumor lines, explicitly designed as a training set for neural network and multivariate analysis. The aim of this work is to adapt a methodology (previously developed for the analysis of …

Aza-isoindolo and isoindolo-azaquinoxaline derivatives with antiproliferative activity
2015
Abstract Three new ring systems, pyrido[2′,3′:3,4]pyrrolo[1,2- a ]quinoxalines, pyrido[3′,2′:3,4]pyrrolo[1,2- a ]quinoxalines and pyrido[2′,3′:5,6]pyrazino[2,1- a ]isoindoles, were synthesized through an aza-substitution on the already active isoindolo-quinoxaline system and in particular in the position 7 or 4 of the isoindole moiety and in position 5 of the quinoxaline portion. All new compounds were screened by the National Cancer Institute (Bethesda, MD) against a panel of 60 human tumor cell lines. Biological results of the most active derivatives, with pGI 50 values between 7.09 and 7.27, confirmed the importance of the presence of methoxy substituents for biological activity. The ant…
Postemanzipatorischer Antisemitismus in Wien. Ferdinand Wilhelm Bronners Komödie "Schmelz, der Nibelunge"
2020
Ferdinand Wilhelm Bronners "Schmelz, der Nibelunge" comedy (1905) reflects anti-Semitism and anti-Slavism in Vienna around 1900. The main character suffers painfully from the inner conflict between her German-national identification and her Jewish descent. The author of the comedy converted to Protestntism and denied all his life his Jewish heritage. The aim is to clarify whether the Galician Jew and writer Ferdinand Bronner offers on stage a solution to the Jewish question that transcends racial anti-Semitism and Zionism beyond the seemingly opposite tendencies in time.
Mechanism change in a simulation of peer review: from junk support to elitism
2014
Abstract Peer review works as the hinge of the scientific process, mediating between research and the awareness/acceptance of its results. While it might seem obvious that science would regulate itself scientifically, the consensus on peer review is eroding; a deeper understanding of its workings and potential alternatives is sorely needed. Employing a theoretical approach supported by agent-based simulation, we examined computational models of peer review, performing what we propose to call redesign, that is, the replication of simulations using different mechanisms. Here, we show that we are able to obtain the high sensitivity to rational cheating that is present in literature. In additio…
Effcts of Dextran Sulphate (Dxs) on Lymphocyte Localization in Complement-Deficient Mice: Evidence that the Fifth Component of Complement is not Impl…
1984
AbstractThe effects of subcutaneously or intraperitoneally administered dextran sulphate (DXS) (5nmg/kg) on the subseguent 1 h localization of intravenously injected radiolabelled lymph node cells was investigated in complement deficient mice which lack C5.DXS proved to be equally as potent in depressing cell localizzation in deficient as compared to normal mice. These findings. indicate that the terminal complement components are not, essential for DXS activity.
Le réalisme social américain à l'ère postmoderne : (Russell Banks, Raymond Carver, Richard Ford)
2012
His study focuses on the works of Russell Banks, Raymond Carver and Richard Ford. They started writing during the 1960s and 1970s, at a time when the self-reflexivity and metafictional play of postmodernist writers were drawing a lot of critical attention in academic circles. However, they consider themselves to be realist writers. In “A Few Words about Minimalism,” John Barth suggested that the return to realist fiction in the mid-1970s could be both a reaction against so-called “postmodernist” fiction and a symptom of the social and economic unease of the period. Indeed, Cathedral, Continental Drift and The Sportswriter describe in accurate detail the everyday lives of ordinary American m…
Entrectinib: a potent new TRK, ROS1, and ALK inhibitor
2015
Abstract: Introduction: Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and their signaling pathways, control normal cellular processes; however, their deregulation play important roles in malignant transformation. In advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the recognition of oncogenic activation of specific RTKs, has led to the development of molecularly targeted agents that only benefit roughly 20% of patients. Entrectinib is a pan-TRK, ROS1 and ALK inhibitor that has shown potent anti-neoplastic activity and tolerability in various neoplastic conditions, particularly NSCLC. Areas covered: This review outlines the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, mechanism of action, safety, tolerability, pre-cl…
